Design for a block of 6 flats in Observatory in Cape Town. The new building takes visual cues from the existing urban fabric, especially the roof profile and material palette. The Victorian semi-industrial neighbourhood is typified by old brick buildings with corrugated roofs and is an important historical neighbourhood on the fringe of the city.
The small site offered a challenge in accommodating all six units and the parking required. The units are raised above the ground which is reserved for cars and services and instead a shared social space is created on the roof-top level, taking advantage of the mountain views.
